The Story
Sam's Cafe in Primrose Hill hosts an artist-in-residence program where artists display their work on the cafe walls. For example, writer and broadcaster Andrew Marr exhibited his abstract drawings there. Sam's Cafe's program is an informal arrangement where artists are invited to show their art within the cafe's friendly, community-focused environment.
The Artwork
The current artist residency is with Maxine Gregson, a contemporary artist and printmaker based in London. Based in a workshop in Hackney, east London, Maxine creates intriguing artworks by combining typography, photography, grid layering, and nostalgic imagery. Her hand-pulled screen prints are a unique union of vintage motifs and futuristic compositions, a style often described as 'Nostalgic Futurism'.
These vintage-inspired limited edition prints are a masterful mixture of old and new influences. By blending retro and current imagery, Maxine creates surrealist artworks that are at once futuristic yet deeply familiar, with each piece lovingly created by hand.
